Remembering
We were just getting into the swing of the new semester a few weeks ago when we got a call telling us that Nathan's oldest brother, Ian, had unexpectedly died. He was running in the local 'Peach Days' race and had collapsed. CPR was started immediately and EMTs tried to revive him without success. He was gone.
I didn't know him well. In fact I was only just getting to know him. We met for the first time at our openhouse in July. The memories I have of him are few, but full of humor and spice and all kinds of awkward laughter.
His funeral was the best kind: honest. Both of his parents spoke honestly about the pain and joy of calling Ian their son. There had been rough years with Ian and they spoke about those candidly as well as the many, many good things they learned from him. Being there gave me pause to reflect upon life, death, and the soul. My testimony of each was renewed. That this life is precious and important. That death is not the end, but rather the beginning of something new. And that our bodies are not complete without the essential presence of our spirit.
So this post is dedicated to Ian, in his entirety: good, bad, and everything in between. You will be missed...
I'm looking forward to the day we meet again. May it be as humorous as the first!
