unofficial roommates

So we found out fairly quickly after we moved last August that we shared our apartment with another species, the myrmex, commonly known as an ant. We have to be careful not to live dishes on the table overnight or anything or else our little co-habiters will attempt to finish off what we've left behind.

Well with that background, a few weeks ago my mom was going through a box of stuff in her room and found some chocolate she had meant to put in our stockings for Christmas. Most of the chocolate was still unopened, but there was part of a king size peanut butter Hershey's bar that had been rewrapped in it's packing. Well this is what was left of it...


Apparently our ants like peanut butter, but aren't so crazy about chocolate. All in all, it was pretty impressive.

The ring just keeps getting bigger!

So I just thought I'd share some good news. I received an email a few days ago from Purdue offering me yet another assistantship change. This the third assistantship I've been offered and each offer gets a little better. This last offer is for something called the Ross Fellowship. It isn't really a fellowship in the traditional sense of fellowships but I won't get into all that. Anywho with this Ross Fellowship it extends my assistantship to a 12 month assistantship instead of only 10 months, guarantees me funding for four years, and it pays a bit more per month than my original assistantship. I'm still not totally clear on all that is entailed and what other new responsibilities and/or perks there are, but it is kind of exciting.

When I first sent in my official acceptance to Purdue my mom jokingly said 'I pronounce you grad school and grad student' After this last email from Purdue (and in keeping with the marriage metaphor) I told her that I feel like they keep taking the ring back and making it bigger!

Really I'm grateful and hoping that this is also indicative of some divine affirmation of the decision to go. It also means I have to be at Purdue a couple of weeks earlier than I was planning. So much to do!

Numbers

So periodically I like to figure out how many shots I have given myself over the course of my diabetic career. I recently passed my four year mark of being diabetic and I figure as of four years I given myself

5840 shots

minimally. Really the number is probably a bit higher, closer to six thousand, but still an impressive figure if I don't say so myself.

(So I'm determined that for each old movie I watch I'm going to write up a little review. All this old movie watching should really not go to waste!)

I guess you would term this a bit of a romantic comedy, with some mystery and suspense thrown in. Harold Dean (Michael Caine) concocts a plan to steal an expensive statue from the world's richest man, with a little help from Nicole Chang (Shirley Maclaine) only she doesn't really know it. What ensues is nothing short of hilarious. Maclaine's dry humor, as always, is a delight and who knew that Michael Caine was actually young and suave once! (Muppet Christmas Carol is what pops into my head when someone mentions his name). This film is a great tribute to the gap that sometimes lies between our own expectations and reality.
